1888 Model 19J American Grade Open Face. The 1888 Model seems to be a product of the design engineers at Waltham. It introduces a number of significant improvements including the motor barrel and the double roller. These appear on the 1888 Model in the higher grades much earlier than on any other American watches.

This is a good example of the 19 jewel movement with the correct AWWCo gothic lettered dial and the distinctive winding wheels that are found only on the 1888 American Grade. The winding wheels are very subtle and at first do not appear to have great distinction. However, the damascening pattern is strictly radial on the parts. All other wheels with "snailing" have at least some curvature to the lines. These wheels seem to have been designed to elicit a "How did they do that?" from knowledgeable machinists.

This watch is housed in a very nicely engraved 14K open faced case without any indication of the maker. It may be Waltham production.

The movement serial number is 6,500,245.
