This watch was in the Engineering Department at Waltham when the factory closed in the 1950's and was given to Pat Caruso with other prototypes and material at that time. There are no markings on the watch movement and none under the dial or on the bridges. Pat believed this watch was made from 1888 model material and was reworked from a watch taken from the line. The damaskeening pattern is similar to that on some of the 1884 Chronographs and repeaters that were modified from production watches in the New York Gold Case Shop. This pattern has an interesting blocked appearance that makes it distinct. The watch originally had screwed down jewel settings which have been filled in with flush (unslotted) screws and then damaskeened over. I believe the dial and case were added by Pat. The watch has 17 jewels and no diamond end stones. The train is polished gold. It is likely that this watch was the prototype for the 1899 Bridge Model and was used to demonstrate to management what the appearance of the proposed model would be. |
