This chronograph is an example of the high grade simple chronograph in an open face case. The train has some gold wheels and the movement is attractively damaskeened in the "fish scale" pattern. This pattern appears on most of the high grade complicated Walthams. The simpler frosted finish and gilt finish are generally reserved for Riverside Grade and lower. This watch is listed as an Am'n grade. This pattern of damaskeening is rarely found on other Waltham watches. It appears on two very early bridge models, one of which is a converted 88 model ebauche. Given the path to production of these watches, it is possible that this damaskeening pattern was applied at the same time as the complications as a rework pattern to hide and scratches and minor damage that would have occurred during the fitting of the complication.

This watch with serial number 2,360,987 is from the Am'n grade run 2,360,951 to 2,361,000 produced between January and May 1885. A run of Riverside grade immediately precedes this run at 2,360,901. Interestingly both runs are indicated as 4 pairs jeweled (or 15 jewels).

The Waltham chronographs use an interesting conical wheel and are difficult to see well. Therefore I have included a large number of examples of low angle images looking into the movement. Click on any hyperlink or picture for a full screen view.
