For a long time I thought there were no collectible 1877 model Walthams. However, when we were putting together the article on the Illinois grade 105 and its worthy competitors I was looking for Waltham's reaction to the 105. It turns out that Waltham decided to take some of their existing 18 size production and upgrade it with Breguet hairsprings and additional adjustment. The result was a relatively small number of 1877 model higher grade watches. These were quickly supplanted by the 1883 models, which must have been in the design phase when these watches were made.

The handwritten records indicate that a number of watches out of the run of 1,000 were changed from flat to Breguet hairspring. The run was made between August 1883 and February 1884. The serial number is 2088797

This watch also has a very nice case with a train engraved on the front cover and a lighthouse on the back cover. The mark is an early Philadelphia Watch Case Co. mark for 25 years.
