This watch is an example of the next to highest grade produced in the 1877 model. It was the highest grade at the time it was made, but some later Appleton Tracy grade watches received Breguet overcoil hairsprings and were adjusted to a higher standard. this example, with serial number 1,103,052, was made in September 1878 and is one of the earliest 1877 Appleton Tracy grade with production having started in November 1877. All 1877 models are either hunting case or keywind. The similar open face movement is the 1879 model. The case has an interesting mark with a recessed, raised anchor that looks like a Dueber Watch Case Co. mark. The case seems to be solid rather than gold filled and is likely a lower carat solid gold. The key feature of this watch is the black "Regimental" dial. The hands are silver to match the dial, which is fully reversed with a black enamel ground and white enamel marking. The sunk seconds bit also receives the same treatment. As can be seen from the picture of the face of the watch, the dial has slight damage around the edge. I have taken the liberty of repairing the dial with my photo editor for the dial shot shown above. The dial can be put in condition as pictured when I decide to spend the time and/or money to do it. |
