This is an interesting case with a Fitch's patent swing ring combined with Giles patent Anti-Magnetic Shield. Giles shield most often appears as a cuvette in combination with a soft iron cup that surrounds the movement. Here it is used with a swing ring and the cup is extended as part of the back shield. There is an interesting oddity to the Giles shields. At some point, the letter "I" was broken in the die that was used to stamp the name in the shields and cases marked after that time say "SH ELD" instead of "SHIELD." We know from this that this particular example is one of the later ones. |
