Smaller Waltham watches are often finished to a degree equivalent to the American Grade even though they do not carry the grade designation. Most commonly these are Am'n Grade movements. It is likely that Waltham could not achieve the timekeeping standards they wanted for these watches to mark them "American Watch Co." but this is just speculation. In any case they are very lovely. A second class of small watches are the post 1900 smaller watches in the Riverside Maximus and Maximus A grades. After 1890 these grades replaced the Am'n Grade as the second quality grade line. Eventually after the American Grades were no longer produced, these became the top grade line by default. There are multiple examples in the collection of most of these watches, because they differ so much in dial and casing styles. |
