This example of the Hamilton 36 size Torpedo Boat Watch was finished without the up/down indication on the dial. The up/down mechanism is in the piece, but the pieces to finish on the dial were omitted to reduce the cost. Pieces in this configuration are believed to have been sold for civilian use. I think the gimbaled watches are a bit less common than the flat deck watches. Those missing the wind indicator are probably the scarcest of the lot but are not particularly sought after. Many that started life like this example have been butchered over the years by people attempting to add the up/down indicator. Unlike the later model 22, the gimbaled and flat versions of the 36 size are really different, not just packaged differently. The winding arbor is a relatively small change, but the plates do not have the provision for the stem winding parts either. You can see the differences in the angle view of the movements. The flat watch companion piece in the collection is also believed to be a civilian rather than military piece. |
