The Chronometer Escapement is not particularly well suited to wear in the pocket. It is possible for the escapement to "set" or stop operating if it gets a shock at the critical moment in the cycle of operations.

However, many fine pocket chronometers were made in the 18th and 19th centuries and they often represent the highest achievements of the particular watchmaker.. Pocket chronometers were used as navigation instruments by some ships masters and had the advantage that they were kept at a relatively uniform temperature by the warmth of the wearer's body. Some were also used as deck watches but in general lever watches were preferred for that service.

The links at the left are arranged chronologically by the date the watches were manufactured.
