The 23J Series 0 originally was made with a jeweled safety barrel. This can be seen in the early unmarked example. The same safety barrel also appears on the Series 5 movements with a jeweled barrel. When the E. Howard Watch company discontinued the use of the safety barrel, they added ruby jewel banking pins to continue to offer a 23 jewel watch.
