| These watches are interesting for the innovative construction techniques. The construction follows many of the claims in C. Vander Woerd's 1869 dustproof patent. This is the 21 jewel model marked with the top grade solid star and the letter V below the star. Howard referred to this watch as the Series 14. I originally thought this was a 19J watch from counting the apparent jewels. Sandy Berger told me it was 21J, but did not tell me where they were, so I was unconvinced. Jerry Treiman pointed me to an article by Arthur Borg in the August 1967 Bulletin of the NAWCC that describes the watch in great detail. The other two jewels are mounted in the walls of the banking hollow and function the same as the jewel banking pins on 23J Series 0 watches. Since the jewels are not adjustable, the banking is adjusted at the factory by touching up the fork width. Many thanks to Sandy and Jerry for setting me straight.
