The grade 194 is the open face companion to the grade 190. It features the same finish that these two watches share with the 156 and 162. The 194 is a 23 jewel watch with a jeweled barrel, like the 190.

This example with serial number 7425902 is from the second of three runs for a total production of 3,000.

The grades 190 and 194 were Elgin's first 23 jewel watches, preceding the 18 size,  23 jewel grade 214 Veritas by two years. The 214 was the only 23 jewel 18 size grade, but Elgin produced a range of watches from B. W. Raymond to Lord Elgin in 16 size 23 jewels. The total of all 23 jewel pocketwatch grades was still relatively low with 65,600 production in all pocketwatch grades and size. Elgin later produced a number of 23 jewel wristwatch models.
