The Lord Elgin name first appears on the 21 jewel grade 162 in a few examples. It then appears on the 23 jewel grade 351 in two runs. The first run is pendent set and the second run is lever set. I believe that the first run of Lord Elgins were intended as presentation watches and the second run was intended as the top of the railroad watch lines. The various grades marked Veritas seem to be of equivalent quality to the Lord Elgins and it is arguable whether the Lord Elgin was really intended to be the company's prestige watch. Subsequently the C. H. Hulburd became the company's "official entry" into the prestige race. This page has examples of both runs of grade 351. I think the first run is slightly more attractive than the second run. In particular the engraving on the balance cock is better and the arrangement of the adjustment markings is a little more interesting. It also has a red gold train as compared to the pale gold train on the lever set example. The pendent set example is in an original gold presentation case. The lever set example is currently a loose movement but may be cased when an appropriate case is found.
