This example with serial number 8816 is hallmarked for 1815 and is the earliest example of the Savage 2 pin escapement that I know of. More detail pictures are shown on the escapement page. I have not discovered who Charles R. Mallory was, who was presumably the first owner of the watch. The date 1816 appears on the back of the case with Mallory's name. George Savage invented the escapement sometime between 1814 and the date of this watch. He emigrated to Canada in 1818 and worked primarily as a silversmith from that time on. English watches with Savage's signature are unknown. Given Barraud's penchant for innovation it is conceivable (and a pleasant fantasy) that this was the first instance of the escapement in a working watch. |
