This movement is the only known example of this Barraud & Lund ebauche, although the form was used by other makers and may have first been used by Thomas Earnshaw, Jr. It is marked as the second series, 2/6107, which would place it in the period around 1855 to 1860. It is listed in the Jagger book on Barraud in some detail and belonged to David Penney at the time the supplement was written. The escape wheel is somewhat unusual with a recessed hub similar to that found on high grade Swiss watches of the 20th century. This particular watch was used for the illustration of the Duplex escapement in George Daniel's book Watchmaking (fig. 436, pg. 203), which David illustrated.
The dates on the second series are confusing at best. Watches have appeared with hallmarks as early as 1825 for sn 1946 yet there is an 8 day chronometer with sn 747 that according to Jagger's chronology would date to 1845. |
