This fascinating little watch appears to be original to the box it was found in. The box has the address 49 Cornhill, while the watch itself has the earlier 41 Cornhill address. The construction is unusual also with a full plate movement at a time when essentially all of Barraud's production was 3/4 plate construction. In addition to the layout, the finish is unusual as well. The watch is jeweled with the basic 7 jewels, but the escape wheel has cap jewels bringing the total count to 11 jewels. The fixtures are also rather special with a highly polished hairspring stud rather than the more common gilt variety and a lovely polished and shaped regulator arm. The serial number is 1993 in the 3rd series the hallmark date letter has been obliterated with some sort of pin punch. It should be an A or B for 1876 or 1877. That date is appropriate for the change in address from 41 to 49 Cornhill. The 14 size watch 3/1906, also in the collection, is dated 1875 (u). The box is a nice addition to the watch with both the address and a size mark on the bottom of the box indicating a size 6 watch. |
