Dana Blackwell told a story at a meeting of the MIT Watch Club about a ship in the crossing from Liverpool to New York in the 1850's that lost the use of the ship's chronometer during the voyage. The captain used his Cooper duplex watch as the chronometer for the remainder of the voyage and navigated successfully to New York harbor without further incident.

This story was widely reported at the time and led to a great surge in popularity of these watches in the United States. The watches were mostly delivered as loose movements and fitted to cases in the United States as was this example with its 18K case by M.G.
