Hunt & Roskell 1/2 1/4 Repeater

This watch is a smaller example of the work produced for Hunt & Roskell with serial number 12128 and hallmarked for 1863.. The company were the London agents for the Breguet firm and produced many elegant watches. This watch was a presentation in 1864 to H. F. Sweetser by the contractor for the Atlantic & Great Western Railway. The donors monogram appears on the back but is difficult to read. It may say "M H LLC." I have not had the opportunity to research who the general contractor on the Atlantic & Great Western was.

There is an excellent site on the history of the enterprise at Atlantic & Great Western but it does not answer the questions about Sweetser or the contractor. Since part of the funding and the materials for the line were obtained in Europe, it is possible that Sweetser had something to do with business assistance in England.

The half quarter repeater repeats the hours and quarters like a quarter repeater and then strikes another single blow if the time is more than 7 1/2 minutes past the quarter hour.
