| Hamilton 18 size, 17 jewel, Grade 938 lever set, serial number 13,458, produced in May 1896. Double sunk Roman numeral dial. Private label for I. G. Davis, Tilton NH. 14 karat R&F open face case. Inscribed on cuvette to 3 generations of the Cass family of Tilton, NH. The original dial was apparently broken. It may have had the jeweler's name on it or it may have said "Hamilton Watch Co." Dials with just "Hamilton" are not likely to be original on movements with SN under 100,000. The Grade 939 is even rarer than the 938. This example is in normal factory dress and cased in a Hamilton display case. It is serial number 15,856 produced between November 1900 and January 1902. It does have an appropriate dial that may be original. The Grade 938 and 939 were Hamilton's highest grade 17 Jewel full plate watch and also the most scarce when both open face and hunting case models are considered. Total production of the 938 was 1,916 and total production of the 939 was 1,112 according to Col. Townsend's count of the Hamilton records. 938: Front, Dial, Back, Case mark, Cuvette, Cuvette mark, Movement, Second view of movement 939: Front, Dial, Back, Movement, Second view of movement
