This is a very complete example of the Hamilton Model 22 deck watch. This model was also furnished in a gimbaled case for use as a navigational timepiece. The Hamilton model 22 was developed during WWII and incorporated all of the latest technology available at the time. This included Invar and Elinvar for the balance and hairspring and unbreakable mainsprings. It is interesting to note that, according to the notice slip, this precision timepiece was not rated in positions like a pocketwatch even though it appears very similar to one. The plates are engraved "Adjusted to 6 Positions" so it is not clear which piece of information is accurate. I suspect that the timepiece was adjusted to 6 positions, but received its final rating only in the dial up position. This example with serial number 2F27429 was made after the war and was sold for civilian use, so it has no ordnance markings on the case or box. |
