Pennsylvania Rail Road

Pennsylvania Rail Road The Pennsylvania Rail Road was probably the second rail road in the United States to provide watches for use on the line. The Vermont Rail Road was probably first with Barraud watches supplied by E. W. Bond in Boston. Pennsylvania Rail Road purchased watches to be use on each of the engines in the line. At least one Waltham 1857 model has been found from these watches and this appears to be an example by Wm. Cooper of London. The case markings appear to be from the American company Muckle and Zesinger which was in business from 1867 to 1872. The watch movement appears to be older than this, but may have been in stock with an American firm when originally purchased. The movement has had considerable abuse over the years and no attempt has been made at restoration. Front, Back, Dial, Cuvette, Movement cap, Inside cap, Case mark, Movement, Edge view of movement, |
