Waltham introduced the American Watch Co. name on watch movements as a grade marking in 1859 with the 3/4 plate 18 size "thin model." This marking continued to distinguish their very highest grade of watch through many models and sizes until the 1899 Bridge Model marked the last use of the name.

In the later years, the Riverside Maximus began to encroach on the top end status of the American Watch Co. grade, but it was not until the Premier Maximus prestige watch that the top grade designation passed to another name.

This presentation traces the development of the various models of the American Watch Co. grade over the KW18 (1859), KW20 (1862), KW16 (1862), 1868, 1872, 1888, OM (1891), 1894 and 1899 models. Examples of each model will be available for hands on study.
