Evolution of the Marine Chronometer and Precision Timekeeping This presentation starts with the Act of Queen Anne in 1714 and the quest for Longitude with the story of John Harrison and the subsequent struggles between John Arnold and Thomas Earnshaw. This is followed by a survey the development of commercial marine chronometer, and the various technical problems that were discovered and solved. The number of example pieces is somewhat limited because of size and transportability but will generally include pocket examples by Arnold and a couple of later chronometers including designs to compensate for middle temperature error and some 20th century deck watches and late chronometers.
