Made for the Railroad

Charles Vander Woerd developed the 1870 model during 1869. The first units shipped in January 1870. This watch was Waltham's first attempt to make a watch that was specifically targeted at railroad workers and expressmen.

The 1870 model was only produced in the Crescent Street grade and was Waltham's highest grade full plate watch at the time it was made.

The 1870 model was also the principle test bed for Waltham's new stem winding experiments.

This talk discusses the features and many variations of the 1870 model.

The talk is based on a paper prepared for the NAWCC Bulletin that may be published sometime in 2007.  The paper was written in collaboration with Whit Joyner, who had the original idea to do an exposition of the model 1870. It will be part of a group of articles on the Crescent Street Grade.
