S# 46,307 - This Model 1871 nickel, adjusted stemwind movement dates to approximately 1877. In this movement the pallet lever banks off the sides of the pallet bridge, rather than against adjustable banking pins. While this final method employed by Howard of eliminating banking pins became standard throughout the world in later years, other American makers were slow to embrace it at the time. Only Howard, who was prepared to lavish copious quantities of skilled labor on his watches, was prepared to accept the challenge of carefully tuning large numbers of escapements in this manner.
