The "complicated" Waltham watches are believed to have been produced in the gold casing department in New York that was lost in a fire in the late 1880's. The highest grade of these watches have the damascening pattern shown on this example and have full or partial gold trains. This example has a partial gold train. These designs are products of the Nashua department, but the complications were most likely designed by Lugren and later by Meylan in the New York office. This example was purchased as an uncased movement missing the upper portion of the split second works. It was restored with parts from a Timing & Repeating Watch Co. of Geneva movement that is identical in design to the Waltham examples. The case is a gold filled crescent street case that was also found on a Timing & Repeating Watch Co. watch. The serial number is 1,833,045. The run from 1,833,001 to 1,833,100 in the handwritten records is listed as Am'n Grade Chronograph, 4 pairs jeweled made between June and October 1883.
